August 31: Cities as women

I was on the phone with a good friend from DC today and we talked for a bit about DC as a city and as a culture.

I have a Spanish friend who once tried to explain the difference between Madrid and Barcelona to me (he lives in Madrid). He described Barcelona as a beautiful, seductive, one-night stand. She's stunning, but it's all skin deep. Madrid, though, she's a long-time lover. The more you get to know her, the more you fall in love with her. There's really substance in her bones.

I like to think of cities as personalities. I've had to defend DC many a time since leaving it and this conversation with my friend about DC brought up this thought, of cities as women. What would DC be? I once told someone that you have to earn your love for DC. It's not immediate. You earn that love with your teeth. DC is a dominatrix. She's a killer.
